And that’s completely normal. In fact, that feeling is a sign that you’re standing right at the edge of something powerful: growth. We often tell ourselves that success comes from playing it safe, sticking to what we know, and avoiding risks. But the truth is far more exciting. Success doesn’t happen in the safety of what’s familiar; it happens when you take that leap into the unknown.
Think of every major step you’ve taken so far. Your first day of high school. Joining a new sports team. Trying out for a role in a school play. Making a new friend. None of those moments came from staying in your comfort zone. They happened because you said, “let me try.” Success is built in the exact same way. It’s not about being fearless; it’s about acting even when you feel fear.
When you start university, you’ll find yourself surrounded by opportunities disguised as challenges. A tough course, unfamiliar environments, a lecture where you’re expected to actively take part in the discussion, or perhaps even societies/clubs/teams you’re curious about but scared to join. These are the moments that determine the direction of your life. If you step forward, even with shaky hands, you open doors that lead to confidence, skills, and achievements you never imagined. All because you made that leap.
But you should also bear in mind, that leaping into the unknown doesn’t mean being reckless. It means being brave enough to choose growth over comfort. It’s choosing to apply for that opportunity or bursary, even if you’re unsure you’ll get it. It’s asking a question in class, even if your voice trembles. It’s attending that orientation event alone because you know it’s your chance to meet new people. These small risks build into big results.
And the best part: every leap, no matter how small, teaches you something. You learn resilience when things don’t go as planned. You’ll learn independence when you figure things out on your own. You’ll also learn self-belief when you come to the realisation that you’re capable of more than you thought. And slowly, the unknown becomes less scary, all because you’ve proven to yourself that you can handle it.
So, as you prepare for varsity, remember this: success is waiting for you, but not in the places you’ve already mastered. It’s out there, just beyond your comfort zone, calling you to rise, explore, and become the person you’re meant to be. All it takes is one brave step into the unknown. And that step could change everything.
We look forward to welcoming our future Madibaz students next year.
