Change the world

Starting university is a thrilling yet scary experience. You're stepping into a new world, filled with unfamiliar faces, challenging courses, and endless possibilities
But don't worry, you're not alone! Many students before you have navigated this journey, and with a bit of guidance, you’ll fit right in.

1. Embrace the Unknown
  • Expect the unexpected: University life is full of surprises. Be open to new experiences, people, and ideas. Days will vary, so embrace the unpredictability and learn to go with the flow.
  • Step outside of your bubble: Join clubs, attend events, and strike up conversations with people you don't know. You don’t need to do it all at once but start slowly and build-up your confidence until you are comfortable in new settings.

2. Prioritise your studies
  • Time management is key: Create a study schedule that works for you. Try a few variations to see which works for you and then adapt that one.
  • Seek help when needed: Don't hesitate to ask your professors or teaching assistants for help. Universities also offer a range of support services for students to ensure that their needs are met, including equipping them with skills and resources to overcome most obstacles, for all others, there is additional support from trained facilitators to help guide students on their way.
  • Use study resources: Take advantage of libraries, success coaching, tutoring centres, and writing labs. These resources are there to help you and only work if you join the support these centres offer students.

3. Build strong relationships
  • Connect with your peers: Study groups, social gatherings, and group projects can help you form lasting friendships. It may seem forced or dauting at first but remember that everyone is new and that it only takes one person to break the ice.
  • Be engaging: Build relationships with your professors and tutors, who can not only guide you on your academic journey but can also help you when you need support for future research opportunities, internships, and mentorship.

4. Take care of yourself
  • Prioritise YOU: Don't neglect your well-being. Practice self-care techniques like meditation, fitness, healthy eating or spending time outdoors. Don’t isolate yourself or only focus on your studies, take time for yourself, either on your own or with spending time with friends. Refill your cup before you tackle your next challenge.

5. Don't be afraid to ask for help
  • Speak up: Academic advisors can help you choose courses, plan your schedule, and navigate academic challenges. They are there to help you and are just as invested in your success as you are. You’ll never know unless you ask …
  • Utilise counselling services: If you're struggling with homesickness, stress, anxiety, or depression, then don't hesitate to seek professional help. Universities employ a whole hosts of support service staff who will guide you through and get you the support you need.

Remember, finding your way at university is a journey, not a destination. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and most importantly, be kind to yourself. You've got this!
