It’s a big moment. And while it may feel overwhelming at times, it is also a moment to recognise just how far you have come.
Your final exams are important, but they are also the culmination of everything you have worked towards throughout your Grade 12 year. Every lesson, every past paper you worked through, every concept you struggled with until it finally made sense, and every time you chose to keep going when you felt tired has contributed to the preparation that brought you here.
You may not feel completely ready, and that’s okay.
Very few people walk into an exam feeling like they know absolutely everything. What matters is that you have prepared, you have learned, and you have given yourself the opportunity to do your best. Now it’s time to trust the work you have put in.
“From all of us at Mandela University: good luck, Matrics! May all your hard work and preparation bring you success, not only in your final exams, but in everything that lies beyond them.”
With several subjects and multiple papers ahead of you, it can be easy to think about everything at once. Try not to. Rather focus on the paper in front of you. Give each subject your attention when it’s time and then move on to the next one.
Also remember to take care of yourself during the exam period as well. Make sure to get enough rest, eat properly, stay hydrated and give yourself enough moments to pause, breathe and reset. A clear and rested mind can make all the difference when you are sitting in that exam hall.
And if a paper doesn’t exactly go as you hoped, don’t let one exam determine how you feel about everything that comes next. It’s easy to see your final exams as the finish line. But really, they are the beginning of something new. Soon, your school uniform will be replaced by a new routine.
You’ll make new friends, discover new interests, experience new challenges and begin making decisions about the future you want to build. For some of you, that may mean heading straight into higher education. For others, it could be taking a different path before deciding what comes next.
Whatever your journey looks like, your school journey has given you more than just marks. It has given you experiences, lessons, resilience and a better understanding of yourself. Although your results form part of your next chapter, they don’t define your potential.
So, as you prepare for your final exams, it’s also okay to think about what comes next. Perhaps you already know what you want to study. Perhaps you have a few options in mind. Or perhaps you’re still figuring it out.
There is no single timeline for finding your direction.
Your future may feel a long way away while you are studying for your next exam, but every step you take now is helping you move towards it.
This is your moment to show what you have learned, how you have prepared and what you can do. Take a deep breath. Read each question carefully. Manage your time. Trust your preparation. And, most importantly, believe in yourself.
You have worked hard to get here.
Now give every exam your best.
Good luck for the exams!
Your next chapter is waiting.
