Change the world

A small amount of stress over a short time can motivate you, but too much prolonged stress can have a negative impact. Exams are naturally a stressful time, however, with a few practical tips you can learn to better manage your anxiety and worry.

  1. Set realistic goals: When you set attainable goals, it reduces unnecessary expectations and gives you something to work towards. It also helps you to be more productive.
  1. Self-belief: It may have been a difficult year, but you’ve made it this far, so be proud of yourself. You’ve worked hard for this exact moment, so believe in your abilities.
  1. Be mindful: Focus on being present, by practising mindfulness techniques and breathing exercises. You want to get rid of those unwanted and unhelpful negative thoughts.
  1. Take care of yourself: Get sunlight and exercise every day, take regular breaks, sleep enough and choose healthier options when it comes to food, snacks and drinks.
  1. Find a confidant: Talking about things often takes away some of the stress you feel. Talk to someone you trust: a friend, parent, guardian, family member or teacher.
  1. Stay positive: You’ve put in hours of revision, don’t let worry stop you from doing your best. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones and focus on progress not perfection.
  1. Perspective: Exams are important, but they’re also only a small part of your whole life. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and take it one step at a time.
  1. Get help: You aren’t alone in how you feel and there’s nothing wrong with asking for help. Find confidential advice from SADAG, Africa’s largest mental health support group.
